What is constructive alignment?
Constructive alignment is a course-design principle from John Biggs in which learning objectives, teaching activities, and assessment are deliberately lined up. What you assess is what you set out to teach.
The fuller picture.
Biggs starts from the intended learning objectives, each written with a verb that names the cognitive level a learner should reach. Teaching activities are then chosen to give learners practice at that level, and the assessment is designed to elicit evidence of it. When the three line up, a learner who meets the objective can demonstrate it, and the assessment reports something true.
Alignment breaks when the pieces drift apart. An objective might ask learners to analyze, while the assessment only asks them to recall. The course teaches one thing and tests another. Constructive alignment is the discipline of checking that the verb in the objective, the practice in the teaching, and the demand of the question all match.
Why it matters for assessment.
Without alignment, a score does not mean what it appears to mean. A high mark on a recall test says nothing about whether learners can apply or evaluate, even when the stated objective asked for exactly that. Alignment is what lets an assessment stand in for the objective it claims to measure.
It also makes review tractable. When each question maps to a specific objective at a known Bloom's level, you can see at a glance whether the assessment covers what the course intended, rather than reading questions one by one and hoping the coverage is there.
How SayaLab puts it to work.
Alignment runs through the SayaLab pipeline. Before generation, it pulls measurable learning objectives from your material, which are yours to edit, add to, or remove. Every question is then generated against a specific objective at a chosen Bloom's level.
After generation, a validation pass checks objective alignment directly: the question has to genuinely measure its objective, so a learner who has met the objective can answer it and one who has not reliably cannot. The bar our validation is built to meet is that at least 80% of questions validly measure their stated objective, and each question reaches you carrying the objective it maps to as evidence.
