What is Bloom's taxonomy?
Bloom's taxonomy is a framework that classifies learning into six cognitive levels, from recalling facts to creating new work. It gives educators a shared vocabulary for the depth of thinking a question demands.
The fuller picture.
The revised taxonomy orders six levels from lower-order to higher-order thinking: Remember, Understand, Apply, Analyze, Evaluate, and Create. Remember is retrieving knowledge from memory. Understand is constructing meaning, such as explaining or summarizing. Apply is using a procedure in a new situation. Analyze is breaking material into parts and seeing how they relate. Evaluate is making a judgment against criteria. Create is putting elements together into a coherent or original whole.
The level describes the cognitive task, not the difficulty of the content. A question can cover advanced material and still only ask a learner to recall a definition. A well-chosen verb signals the level: define and list point to Remember, while critique and justify point to Evaluate.
Most assessments draw on several levels at once. A formative quiz might lean on Remember and Understand, while a final exam shifts weight toward Apply, Analyze, and Evaluate. The taxonomy is a way to be deliberate about that mix rather than defaulting to recall.
Why it matters for assessment.
Left unchecked, generated questions tend to cluster at the lowest level. The research is consistent: automated questions skew toward recall and are measurably weaker at the higher Bloom's levels. An assessment that claims to test analysis but only tests memory gives a false reading of what learners can do.
Naming the level you intend, then confirming the question actually hits it, is what keeps an assessment honest. It is the difference between a quiz that feels rigorous and one that measures the thinking you set out to teach.
